Advances in miniaturization technology have enabled computer manufacturers to continue to supply higher quality machines in ever-smaller packages. The processing power which, twenty years ago, would have occupied a mainframe computer filling a whole room, today can be carried around in a notebook computer weighing only six or seven pounds. Palmtop computers, small enough to fit in a pocket, have more computational speed and power than supercomputers of the 1950's.
